I am a huge fan of Classic French Toast, but I must say that adding crispy crunchiness to the outside just takes it to a new level. My kids love all my breakfast recipes, but whenever I make this it’s always accompanied by praises of, “Mom this is the best French Toast ever!” Definitely consider serving it with Homemade Syrup to really take it over the top!
Crunchy French Toast
How to Make Crunchy French Toast:
- In a shallow pie dish, whisk together eggs, milk, flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, vanilla.
- Pour the Rice Krispies into a separate shallow bowl and spread them out into and even layer.
- Dip each piece of bread into the egg mixture and then press it gently into the Rice Krispie’s cereal, flipping to coat on both sides.
- Melt a small piece of butter in a skillet over medium heat; add the bread and cook for 2-3 minutes on one side, until golden, and then flip and cook on the other side.
- Serve Crunchy French Toast with homemade syrup and fruit!
How can I prevent my French Toast from being soggy?
- Avoid using really thin slices of bread to make french toast, and instead use thicker slices of bread like Texas toast or Sara Lee Artisan bread.
- Make sure to quickly dip the french toast in the batter on both sides. If you leave the bread in the batter for too long it will absorb too much liquid and that could make it hard to cook all the way through.
- Cook the french toast properly. If using a skillet, maintain a steady medium to medium-low heat so that the french toast doesn’t brown too much before it’s time to flip it. This will also insure the bread cooks all the way through. I cook my french toast on my electric griddle at 350 degrees.

Recipe
Crunchy French Toast
Ingredients
Ingredients
- 4 large eggs
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 8 thick slices bread (like Texas Toast)
- 2 heaping cups crispy rice cereal or crushed corn flakes
Instructions
- Preheat griddle to 350 degrees F or or heat a skillet over medium heat.
- Add cereal to a shallow pie dish or plate. Add all ingredients, except the bread and cornflakes to a blender or to a shallow dish and whisk well to combine. If whisking by hand, it's okay if the flour doesn't mix in completely smooth.
- Add the batter and the cereal to two separate shallow dishes. Dip each piece of bread into the egg mixture on both sides and then press gently into the cereal, flipping to coat both sides.
- Melt a small piece of butter in a skillet or griddle over medium heat (or grease with cooking spray). Place the bread slices on the hot skillet and cook for a few minutes until golden on the bottom and then flip and cook on the other side.
- Serve warm with your your favorite syrup.

Lauren, I can’t rate your recipe because I want to make a suggestion for you and all your readers. I make my French toast a little different and we all agree it’s better. Even my daughter, Bridget, who is a cook on TV, does the same for her family. I just got tired of the toast being so soggy when we ate it. Now it’s a lot better. Sometimes we even smear it with butter and then sprinkle confectioners sugar on it. I hope you try this and agree with us about the results.
So what is your suggestion??
I came here from another French toast recipe that you commented on, and said that you posted the suggestion here… but I can’t tell what the suggestion is, I know I’m my the only one that would like to know.
What’s your suggestion, Linda? I saw your comment on a different post, came here, and still don’t see it…
The cereal burned a little but was still delightful! Thanks so much for this recipe. ❤️ We enjoyed it!
I was wondering if you can bake it in the oven? Sounds like a really great recipe!
I followed most of recipe but didn’t crush the Rice Krispies. I also added a cup of crushed pecans to the dry mixture of rice crispy cereal.
Thank you for a new recipe. 😋
Going to try some chocolate cocoa crispy or a peanut butter Captain crunch. 😋
I’m going to try substituting the cereal with french toast crunch 🙂
Amazingly good and easy 2 make
I am sitting at my table eating this French toast. It is so good I didn’t want to wait before leaving a review. Definitely a keeper recipe.
Try it with Frosted Flakes I’ve been doing it for many years. With homemade blueberry syrup 🙂
Don’t use trader joes organic crisp rice cereal, huge mistake, should have listened to my wife….
Very delicious! I used honey bunches of oats with almonds in place of crushed cornflakes and added some almond extract, will definitely make again!
Great made it this morning family loved it
Followed recipe exactly…it was perfectly delicious!
Thank you for! I served it for my husband’s special birthday bkfst. He and our guests loved it!
My husband and kids beg for this every Sunday morning. It has be come a regular meal in our house! I use sourdough bread, other than that I follow the recipe to a tea.
I just made this this morning! We used sourdough (our French toast bread of choice) and it was sooo good. My kids and hubby said they want this every Saturday morning! Thanks you so much!
This is a wonderful recipe! I made it and the homemade syrup for my husband and toddler son. My son said it was the “best breakfast ever!” Just curious whether you could omit the flour (thinking maybe I could use gluten-free bread for a gluten-free option)?
I’m so glad to hear that, thank you! And yes, you can omit the flour if you’d like.
What is the syrup you are putting on the french toast? That looks awesome as well!!
It is amazing, it’s this recipe for homemade pancake syrup: https://tastesbetterfromscratch.com/homemade-pancake-syrup/
Can these be made ahead of time?
Hi Elle, I wouldn’t suggest making them ahead of time, only because the crunchy topping wouldn’t stay crunchy. You could make the batter ahead of time and store it in the fridge. You could crush the cornflakes and keep them in a ziplock, until you ready to make the french toast. Hope that helps!
Is this the same crunchy grilled toast they serve at the Marriott hotel? I have been searching for this recipe for years!! It is delicious.
This looks great. Is this the same crunchy grilled French toast they serve at the Marriott? I have been searching for this recipe for years. I love it.
This was delicious! My kids and I loved it, (my picky husband said he’d take it or leave it but he doesn’t count). We’re a family of 5 so I added an extra egg and a little extra milk to have enough to make about 2-3 extra slices. I also added a little more vanilla and cinnamon (just because I love cinnamon and vanilla). I made these on an electric grill so they took a little longer than 4 minutes but they were worth the wait. Delish! Thanks.
Thanks Vanesa! So glad you liked it!
My kids love french toast. I be they would love this too. One of my favorite jobs was working in a coffee shop as a server. I loved meeting and talking to the people.
Mmmm! My mouth is watering! I can’t wait to make this!
These look delicious! Pinned!
