Meh. Not German chocolate cake. The only thing German chocolate about this cake is the pecan/coconut frosting. The cake itself is too dark chocolate and the buttercream frosting is unnecessary and makes the cake too rich. Rated 2 stars because the taste was ok but I would not make it again.

I always use a German chocolate cake bar. You can buy the bar at Walmart. I believe it’s by Baker’s that’s how I grew up making it not cocoa powder and the recipe should be maybe on the inside of the package if not you can probably look it up. it makes a lighter cake, not so dark chocolate looking

Did you use the right size cake pans? If not, then the recipe wasn’t followed exactly! Use correct pans, temp and follow the instructions. It DOES make a difference.

I just want to say MANY comments are using the WRONG size pan, altering ingredients, temp, etc. IF you use the recipe, as written, IT IS PERFECT! If you choose to use alternatives, the problem is them – not the recipe!
