Air Fryer French Toast served on a plate, with one being dipped in a little bowl of syrup.

Why I love this recipe:

  • Air Fryer – French Toast made in the air fryer give it the perfect crisp on the outside, but soft on the inside texture. Check out all of my air fryer recipes and let me show you how to use it!
  • Freezer Friendly – This recipe is a twist on my popular Classic French Toast, but I like the air fryer version even better! Feel free to make a large batch and freeze the leftovers; they reheat well in the air fryer.
  • Kid Approved – We love to cut the bread into french toast sticks, which are easy and fun to eat.

How to Make Air Fryer French Toast:

Make Batter: Add all of the ingredients, except the bread, to a shallow dish and whisk well to combine (or add to a blender and blend until smooth).

All of the ingredients for french toast in a shallow dish, with pieces of bread cut into thirds for easy french toast sticks.

Dip: Cut each slice of bread into three pieces/sticks (or you can leave the bread slices whole, if you’d like). Spray the fry basket with non stick spray before each batch. Dip each piece of bread into the egg mixture, dredging well on both sides, and then place in the fry basket, leaving a little space between each one and laying them in a single later.  Be careful not to overcrowd them or they will not get crispy. (You may need to cook them in 3-4 batches, depending on the size of your air fryer).

Strips of bread being dipped in a batter to show how to make the best french toast sticks.

Air Fry at 350 degrees F for 4 minutes then flip them over (separating them from each other if they stick together) and cook for 3-4 more minutes.

Two images showing an air fryer french toast recipe, before and after they are cooked.

Serve air fryer french toast with homemade syrup or maple syrup, breakfast potatoes or a green smoothie.

A delicious french toast stick recipe, all on a plate ready to enjoy.

Recipe Variations:

  • Cinnamon Sugar French Toast Sticks: Mix ⅓ cup sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon in a shallow dish.  Dip French toast sticks in batter and then in cinnamon sugar, coating both sides. Air fry as directed.
  • Brioche French Toast, or Challah Bread: Cut loaf into thick slices. Add 2-3 minutes to the cook time, if needed.
  • Crunchy French Toast: Press the outside of battered bread slices into crushed cornflakes or rice krispies cereal before adding to the air fryer.

Make Ahead And Freezing Instructions:

To Make Ahead: The batter can be made a day ahead of time, stored in the fridge.

To Freeze: Allow air fryer french toast to cool completely. Place in freezer safe bag or container then freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat from frozen in air fryer for 3 minutes on 1 side then 2 minutes on the other, at 400 degrees.

The best Brioche French Toast recipe, stacked and topped with whipped cream and a side of berries.

Why I love this recipe:

  • The Bread – Brioche bread is traditional French bread made with more butter and egg yolks then regular French bread, for a soft texture and sweet, rich buttery flavor. Truly, the brioche bread is the star of this recipe so be sure to look for it in the bakery section of the store, made with real butter and eggs. If you don’t see it there, you can find lesser quality brioche near the regular sandwich breads, that will work.
  • Custard-like Batter – The cream and flour in this recipe help create a really creamy, custard-like sauce that makes excellent french toast. (Flour is my secret ingredient in traditional French Toast as well, for this same reason).
  • Toppings – For a truly elevated experience, make our EASY Homemade syrup and serve with fresh fruit, and a spoonful of whipped cream.

How to make Brioche French Toast:

Preheat Griddle:  Heat to 350 degrees F or heat a large skillet over medium heat.

Blend Ingredients: Add all ingredients, except the bread, to a blender or to a shallow dish then whisk well to combine. If whisking by hand, it’s okay if the flour doesn’t mix in completely smooth.

Dip Bread and Cook: After greasing the griddle with butter, dip the bread into the batter on both sides and place on hot pan. Cook for a few minutes, until the bottom of the bread starts to get golden brown. Flip and cook on the other side the same.

Looking for more breakfast recipes to make in advance? Try my Overnight Cinnamon Rolls, Overnight Breakfast Casserole, or Strawberry Overnight Oats!

Why I love this recipe:

  • The Topping – The easy topping really sets this recipe apart from others and makes it the best french toast casserole. It adds the perfect crunchy texture on top, and tastes incredible!
  • Make Ahead – Nothing beats a breakfast recipe that I can just throw in the oven when I wake up. I love how I can do all the prep the night before!
  • Crowd Pleaser – This Baked French Toast fills a 9×13 pan and I always get so many compliments on it! Everyone loves the flavors of french toast, and this is an easy way we can all enjoy it without standing at the stove making them.

How to make French Toast Casserole:

Slice Bread: Lightly butter the bottom and sides of a 9×13” baking dish. Cut bread into 1 inch chunks and place in dish.

Make Batter: Crack the eggs into a large mixing bowl and whisk to combine. Add the cream and milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt and vanilla and mix well. Pour evenly over the bread cubes.

Combine and Refrigerate: Gently toss the bread around to make sure the top and bottom pieces all get dipped in the egg mixture. Spread out evenly, cover dish, and refrigerate overnight.

Make Topping: Place brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg in a bowl and stir to combine. Cut cold butter into small chunks and add to the bowl. Use a pastry cutter or your hands to combine the mixture until crumbly. Cover and refrigerate until morning.

Bake: Sprinkle the topping evenly over top of the french toast casserole. Bake for 40-50 minutes or until top is golden.

Serve: Allow french toast to cool for at least 10 minutes before cutting into squares. I love eating this just with berries. But you could also top with homemade syrup, maple syrup, or whipped cream.

Make Ahead and Freezing Instructions:

To Make Ahead: Make this french toast casserole and topping the day before and keep covered separately in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, sprinkle the topping on and bake.

To Freeze: Baked french toast can be frozen before baking. Cover very well with plastic wrap and tinfoil and store in the freezer for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge then sprinkle on the topping and bake.

If I offered up breakfast options for a family vote, everyone would choose this classic French Toast recipe, served with fresh fruit, syrup and whipped cream! We’ve been making it for decades, and it’s truly the best french toast recipe!

How to Make French Toast:

Combine Ingredients: Add of the ingredients, except the bread, to a blender or shallow dish and mix to combine.

Dip Bread: Dip each bread slice into the egg mixture, dredging on both sides.

Serve: I love to serve this easy french toast warm, with homemade syrup and a side of berries!

Two stacked slices of the best French Toast with powdered sugar, syrup, and a side of bacon.

Ingredients Notes:

Bread: I recommend using thick sliced bread, like Sara Lee Artesano, Texas Toast, or leftover homemade bread. It’s nice (but not necessary) if the bread is a few days old, or slightly stale. We also loving using thick slices of cinnamon bread or brioche!

Flour: My Secret Ingredient! The flour helps to make more of a “batter” for dipping the bread, which yields extra fluffy and delicious french toast. If mixing the batter by hand, start by mixing flour and eggs, then add the milk and remaining ingredients.

Milk: Any kind of milk will work (even dairy free), but the the higher fat milk, the creamier the batter will be. Whole milk works great and you could even add a little splash of cream if you want.

All of the ingredients needed for the best French Toast recipe.

Looking for more sandwiches? Try my Croque Madame, Lobster Roll, or Tuna Melt!

A homemade Monte Cristo Sandwich cut in half and stacked on a plate.

Why I love this sandwich:

  • Quick – The best Monte Cristo sandwich only takes 20 minutes and you can prep the sandwiches and batter ahead of time.
  • Elevated – We all love a comforting ham and cheese sandwich, but this takes it to the next level! Originally inspired by the Croque Monsieur, this sandwich will be your new favorite!
  • Any meal of the day – Perfect for brunch, a quick lunch or dinner the whole family will enjoy!

How to Make a Monte Cristo:

Assemble Sandwiches: Lay two slices of bread side by side. Spread with a thin layer of Dijon mustard. Top with turkey, Swiss cheese, ham, and second bread slice. Secure toothpicks at an angle on opposite corners to keep the bread slices together.

Make Batter: Add flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon to a mixing bowl and stir together. Whisk in eggs and milk until smooth. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.

Dip Sandwiches: Use tongs to dip each sandwich into the batter, flipping to coat on both sides. Lift up and allow excess batter to drip off and set aside on a plate. Repeat with remaining sandwiches.

Cook: Once oil in pan is hot, add one sandwich at a time, cooking for about 3 minutes (reduce heat if it starts to brown too much on the bottom) until golden and crisp. Flip and cook on the other side until golden. Remove to a paper towel lined plate.

Serve: Cut into halves or quarters before serving, and dust with powdered sugar. Enjoy with a side of raspberry jam.

Make Ahead and Freezing Instructions:

To Make Ahead: The batter can be made ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator.

Freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw completely in the refrigerator, then fry with a little bit of butter in a pan on the stove until crispy. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve with jam.

Recipe Variations:

  • Bread: Try it with sourdough or whole grain would work as well.
  • Cheese: Gruyere, Gouda, emmental would all be delicious.
  • Baked Monte Cristo: batter and place on a lined and greased baking sheet. Bake at 400 for 10-15 minutes, until golden, then flip and repeat on the other side.
  • Traditional French Version: Croque Monsieur or Croque Madame. The first true Monte Cristo sandwich is really a Croque Monsieur. In 1966 Disney made this version and served it at the Blue Bayou restaurant.

They reheat great, and are freezer friendly too, making them perfect for busy mornings that you need a good grab-and-go breakfast for yourself or your kids! We even like to bring them camping and reheat them in tinfoil over the fire.

I love that the ingredients are simple ones that I always have on hand (I keep pre-cooked sausage links in my freezer so I always have them when I want to make these, or breakfast quesadillas or a breakfast skillet).

The ingredients needed to make French Toast sticks.

How to make French Toast Roll-Ups:

Flatten the bread with a rolling pin or your hands. Cut crusts off, if desired.

Slices of bread rolled flat with a rolling pin.

Add sausage link: place the sausage on the front edge of bread and roll up tightly.

A cooked sausage link on top of a piece of bread, ready to roll up to make French Toast Roll-Ups.

Dip into batter: Dip french toast roll ups into the egg mixture (this recipe uses our classic french toast batter), rolling gently to coat all sides, then place on hot griddle.

Bread rolled around sausage links, dipped in french toast batter.

Cook for a few minutes, turning gently as you go, until golden brown on all sides. Serve warm with homemade syrup.

Make Ahead and Freezing Instructions:

To Make Ahead: The egg mixture can be made up to 1 day ahead of time. The sausages can be rolled in flattened bread a few days ahead of time, stored in an airtight container in the fridge. Cooked leftovers can be stored in a sealed container for 1-2 days. Reheat in microwave, toaster oven, griddle or air fryer.

To Freeze: Store in a freezer safe container or bag with as much air removed as possible to prevent freezer burn. Reheat in microwave, toaster oven, griddle or air fryer.

Recipe Variations:

  • Nutella French Toast Rolls: Spread Nutella near the end of the piece of bread. Roll up tightly, dip in egg mixture, and cook according to recipe.
  • Strawberry Cream Cheese: Spread cream cheese near the end of the piece of bread and add diced strawberries, or some strawberry jam. Roll up tightly, dip in egg mixture, and cook according to recipe.
  • Peanut Butter Banana: Spread peanut butter near the end of the piece of bread and top with diced bananas. Roll up tightly, dip in egg mixture and cook according to recipe.
